MagForum 2018 Field Trip A provides an exclusive insight into Hamburg’s famous container port concluding with a visit to CTP’s headquarters and an evening reception.

The tour starts in the historical Speicherstadt district, a UNESCO world heritage site since 2015: the largest warehouse district in the world where the buildings stand on timber-pile foundations. It is located within the HafenCity quarter, and was built from 1883 to 1927.

Other sights include the world famous Elbphilharmonie, one of the largest and most acoustically advanced concert halls in the world, and the view from the Köhlbrand Bridge, over the vast area of Hamburg port.

The tour has special permission to access the container port of Hamburg to see different terminals such as Burchardkai and the famous container terminal Altenwerder.

MagForum 2018 Field Trip B provides an exclusive visit to the Kalikai Terminal, the magnesium salt and potash logistics facility of K+S.

K+S is the world’s largest salt producer and fifth largest potash producer, and a leading producer of magnesium sulphate derived from kieserite, and magnesium chloride derived from potash production.

K+S extracts potash and kieserite at six mines in Germany, which are further processed to create end products or intermediate products. Total combined annual production capacity is about 7 million tonnes of potash and magnesium products for a range of agricultural and industrial market applications.

The Kalikai in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg is a 95,000m2 storage and transloading site with an overall capacity of 405,000 tpa, which has been operational since October 1927. Kalikai is the leading facility in the port of Hamburg for exporting bulk goods.

The 500 metre wharf at Kalikai handles around 500 sea-going and inland waterway ships each year. Three 2,000-3,000 tph bulk loaders are used for loading, and two clamshell 12-24 tonne loaders for unloading; 3.5-4.5m tpa are transloaded, more than 1m tonnes of which is packed in containers.

90% of export materials are transported by train directly to Kalikai for unloading. There they are stored via two underground bunkers with a nominal capacity of 26,000 tpd.
