PLUS: Tom Newman up for A. Frank Alsobrook Distinguished Service Award
Looking forward to catching up next week with the global industrial minerals and mining community at the MINEXCHANGE 2025 SME Annual Conference & Expo, 24-26 February.
Very interested to see how the new US Administration’s plans on commodity import tariff enforcement are being received from both mineral producers and consumers of imported critical minerals in the USA, and how funding and encouragement of domestic mineral projects is actually progressing.
If you’re in town, please drop by or contact me for a catch-up, would be great to meet up.
As well as networking at the Exhibition, I shall be presenting “Fluorspar’s future in batteries: can it achieve ‘critical mass’?” on Tuesday 2.45pm at the Critical and Battery Minerals II Session – and also attending the Industrial Minerals Division Lunch same day, and at 5.30pm the International Reception.
A. Frank Alsobrook Distinguished Service Award to Tom Newman
We are thrilled for our longstanding US industrial minerals contact and friend, Tom Newman, to be receiving at this year’s SME Conference the A. Frank Alsobrook Distinguished Service Award.
“For his unparalleled knowledge and proficiency in advancing our understanding of minerals and applications in cement production for the mining industry and his service to SME.”
As well as being a skilled geologist with 44 years of experience in industrial minerals geology, Tom is a most affable proponent of educating all in the world of industrial minerals.
His unstinting support and humour to this author in his early career learning the industry when based out of New York will never be forgotten, along with the many convivial nights and field trips had together.
As Chief Geologist at Holcim (US) Inc., Tom excels in exploration to mining geology, with work in due diligence, permitting, and mineral resources and reserves. With a proven track record across North America, Mexico, the Caribbean and China, he has driven projects from greenfield exploration to permitting in both open pit and underground operations.
